DR. DOROTHY REDDY

Dorothy Reddy, MD, F.R.C.P. (C) – Child, adolescent and adult Psychiatrist and Medical Director

Dr. Dorothy Reddy is a medical doctor licensed to practice in British Columbia since 2007.

Dr. Reddy received her medical degree from Ross University, School of Medicine in 1999.  She completed her Residency in Psychiatry at the State University of New York. Her Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry was at Columbia University in New York. Following this, she completed a Research Fellowship in the Psychobiology of Mood and Anxiety Disorders under the supervision of Jack Gorman at Mount Sinai, School of Medicine, New York, New York.  She was also mentored by Dr. Jeremy Coplan to enhance her knowledge of biological psychiatry.

After completing her fellowship in New York, Dr. Reddy started a hospital based practice with children and adolescents. She also had two private practices, one in Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York and the other in Manhasset, Long Island, New York.  In the latter, she treated patients who were primarily adults.

Dr. Reddy also became an Associate Professor in the department of psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York where she was involved in clinical trials, teaching and research.

In 2007, Dr. Reddy returned home to Vancouver, BC where she worked at BC Children’s Hospital in the ADHD clinic, Child Inpatient unit and various other specialty Clinics.

Later, she transitioned into her current private practice in North Vancouver where she treats children, adolescents and adult for various psychiatric disorders.

Dr. Reddy has peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals in the United States. She has also published in Canada. She is currently a member of the editorial board for the Journal of the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She is a member in good standing in CMA, BCMA, and APA and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada. In the last 20 years, Dr. Reddy has been deeply interested in understanding the factors which promote the birth of new brain cells or neurogenesis. She has incorporated and promotes the following factors in her treatment plan. These  include exercise, maintenance of the sleep-wake cycle, treatment of underlying psychiatric disorders including medications, appropriate therapy for the disorder, treatment of medical disorders including pain and addiction management ,vitamin and mineral supplementation, if deficient,  healthy Social relationships and meditation.

While researching various ways to help her patients, Dr. Reddy became interested in the role of facial expressions in the pathophysiology and treatment of mood disorders.  It has been long appreciated that psychiatric disorders including depression stem from the brain. However, it is also known that negative emotions can lead to depression.

There are several studies demonstrating improvement in depressive symptoms using Botox to relax facial muscles especially in the glabellar (the area between the eyebrows) region.  It supports the concept, that facial musculature not only expresses, but also regulates mood states.

Intrigued by the conception that mood is not only altered from the inside out but also from the outside to the inside of the body, Dr. Reddy became very interested in the field of medical aesthetics and became certified in administering Botox and Filler.  She also became certified in Venus Legacy Laser device for skin tightening and body contouring in addition to the Environ Retail Certification.

The way an individual perceives him/herself can have a significant impact on mood.  Dr. Reddy is not using medical aesthetics to treat psychiatric disorders.  Rather, she sees medical aesthetics as a tool to promote wellness and help individuals to look and feel better.
