A professional counsellor is a highly trained individual who is able to use a different range of counselling approaches with their clients to help them understand themselves, their pattern of thinking, feelings, and behaviours and help to change them as needed. After the development of a therapeutic relationship between the therapist and client, the therapist helps clients access their existing resources and/or to develop new ones for improved emotional, social, vocational and educational well-being.

Jonah Starr, M.S.W, R.S.W. – Individual and Family Therapist

Jonah brings over a decade of experience working with children, adolescents, adults and their families to the West Coast Wellness team.  Jonah’s extensive clinical background includes work in a variety of community, government and healthcare settings focused in the areas of mental health and substance use.  Jonah earned his Master’s degree in Social Work at the University of British Columbia and is a Registered member of the BC College of Social Workers.  While Jonah provides individual and family counselling to clients of all ages, Jonah is especially known for his unique ability to connect with youth and young adults struggling with a variety of emotional and mental health concerns. 

Jonah has a warm and gentle approach and brings humour, empathy and specialized skills to his therapeutic work with clients. In addition, Jonah is a strong proponent of working from a strengths-based practice framework when counselling individuals and families.  Jonah believes that all people, regardless of their personal struggles, come to therapy with inherent strengths and capacities. Through the therapy process, it is these strengths and capacities that can be mobilized into positive action. Jonah’s therapeutic approach draws on a number of well researched and evidenced based counselling modalities which are tailored to meet each individual’s unique needs.
